Nokdu Bookstore

Gwangju Biennale
Gwangju

NOKDU Bookstore is a meeting place in the middle of the Gwangju Biennale exhibition, a meeting place that adopts the form of a mythic bookstore, the NOKDU bookstore, which played a fundamental role in the events of the May 18 revolution in Gwangju in 1980. This bookstore form is not a historical reconstruction of the original NOKDU bookstore, but a construction of how Dora García imagines this bookstore to be, following the readings, the own emotional and cultural background, and the testimony of different people from Gwangju; a construction happening in a sort of anachronic moment that puts together the past, the present, and the future of an event that catalysed the history of Korea.
